How we use cookies

A cookie is a small piece of data sent from a website and it’s stored on the user’s computer by the user’s web browser, while the user is browsing. Cookies were designed to be a reliable mechanism for websites to remember stateful information (such as items added in the shopping cart in an online store) or to record the user’s browsing activity (including clicking particular buttons, logging in, or recording which pages were visited in the past). They can also be used to remember arbitrary pieces of information that the user previously entered into form fields such as names, addresses, passwords, and credit card numbers.

There are three types of cookies:

Session cookies: these are mainly used by online shops and allow you to keep items in your basket when shopping online. These cookies expire when the browser is closed.

Permanent cookies: these remain in operation, even when you have closed the browser. They remember your login details and password so you don’t have to type them in every time you use the site. The law concerning permanent cookies stipulates that they need to be deleted after a period of six months.

Third-party cookies: these are installed by third parties with the aim of collecting certain information to carry out various research into behaviour, demographics etc.

Laws about cookies?

The intent behind the law is to increase the options available for consumers to protect their data privacy. Cookies enable websites to gather data about visitors and users. A lot of this data is gathered without any user awareness, and more and more companies are learning to exploit the value of that data. But not Brasserie Park. The law hopes to enable consumers to strike a new bargain with these businesses – it requires businesses to inform consumers of what is being gathered, and enables them to choose to participate in this or not.

How to handle cookies?

Disable third party cookies through the privacy settings of your web browser. This prevents ad networks from tracking you across multiple websites. Another option is to change your browser settings so that you are asked to approve every new cookie. This helps you to control which cookies you accept. In the beginning, this will be time consuming. But, as your browser remembers your choices, the window asking you to accept a cookie will only pop up when you surf to a website for the first time
You can also configure your web browser to delete all cookies when you close it. If you choose this option you will be asked to accept cookies every time you want to log in to an account.
